 “Dance Is Freedom”

Have you ever met someone who seems to effortlessly embody their craft? Like it’s more than simply something they do or how they make a living—it’s what encompasses their entire being? This is what it’s like to watch Lisa A. Jordan dance. Just ask hip-hop artist Rob Base—yes, the Rob Base—who once noticed her dancing in the audience at one of his shows back when she was in college. Lisa made such an impact on him that he offered her a dance position on the spot (she was honored but decided to put her education ahead of the tour).

Lisa will be the first to admit that although she has been afforded many opportunities—from teaching a dance workshop to kids at the International School of Prague; casting and choreography for Shout to the Lord Kids, a Dove Awards performance featuring Fred Hammond and a special event featuring Kirk Franklin, to casting and choreography at Bishop T.D. Jakes’s International Singles Conference and also dancing for award-winning artists like DC Talk, Out of Eden and Nicole C. Mullen—outside of a few dance classes she took while in college, Lisa was not professionally trained.

If you know Lisa personally, you can vouch for the fact that dance is on her mind, pretty much on a daily basis. If she’s not actually doing it, Lisa’s coming up with creative ways to teach dance to others—especially children. Yep. Next to her love for dance, there is Lisa’s uncanny connection with children.

Lisa has hosted workshops in the United States as well as Brazil, Africa, Czech Republic, and The Bahamas. “If you can move, you can dance,” Lisa expresses. “Yes, there is a physical fitness component that I like about dancing, especially as it relates to kids. But what I really like to see is how it fosters so much creativity in them. I also like that no matter where I go in the world, something that all young people understand and enjoy is dance.”

Without question, this explains Lisa’s mission statement as it directly relates to dance: “To inspire youth around the world by providing a fun and all-access approach to reach their full potential.” “As I strive to inspire others, I’ve had so many children inspire me,” Lisa shares. “Kids in wheelchairs, dancing. Children who don’t have much at all (literally), dancing. In this season of my life, ‘loyalty to dance’ means a lot to me. I want young people to feel free and confident in their dance. Dance is freedom for me. I want them to feel freedom in it also. Free. Motivated. Content. It’s the kind of atmosphere that she wants kids from around the globe to experience for themselves. She believes, “You forget your problems when you’re dancing.”

Dance On World. Dance On.
